DIRECTIONS:

From the Tallgrass Prairie National Preserve in Strong City, head north on KS-177 toward Council Grove for 18 miles. At the junction of KS-177 and US-56 (Main and Neosho streets), Flint Hills Books is located in the Council Grove National Bank Building on the northeast corner, with parking available streetside. (25 minutes)

From Emporia, head north on KS-99 traveling 35 miles to US-56 in Allen. Turn left/west, and travel 17 miles to Council Grove. Flint Hills Books is located at the junction of KS-177/Neosho St. and US-56/Main St. on the northeast corner. (40 minutes)

From Manhattan, take KS-177 south to Council Grove, traveling 38 miles. Flint Hills Books is located at the junction of KS-177/Neosho St. and US-56/Main St. on the northeast corner in the Council Grove National Bank Building. (43 minutes)

From Salina, travel on I-70 East to Hwy 177, taking Hwy 177 South (the Flint Hills Scenic Byway) to Council Grove. At the junction of Hwys 177 and 56 in Council Grove, turn right onto Hwy 56W/Main Street. Flint Hills Books is at the end of the block, on the north side of the street. (1 hour 23 minutes)

Or take Magnolia Road to Kipp Road. Turn South onto Kipp Road to Hwy 4. Turn left onto Hwy 4 East, traveling through Gypsum and Hope. At Hwy 77, turn right onto Hwy 77 South. At the intersection of Hwy 77 and Hwy 56, turn left onto Hwy 56 East. Flint Hills Books is on Hwy 56 (which is Main Street, Council Grove) on the north side of the street. (1 hour 23 minutes)

From Wichita, take I-135 N/US-81 north and US-50 to KS-177 (north) in Strong City. Turn right onto KS-177 N. Flint Hills Books is located at the junction of KS-177/Neosho St. and US-56/Main St. on the northeast corner. (1 hour 38 minutes)

AREA ATTRACTIONS & EVENTS:

The Santa Fe National Historic Trail celebrates its bicentennial in 2021. Council Grove is home to 10 sites along the trail to explore. From the Neosho River Crossing, commemorated by a new Riverwalk Park, to exhibits at the the Hays House, Kaw Mission State Historic Site and the Last Chance Store, trace the path pioneers took on the 900-mile trek across five states.

 

Council Grove Lake, a U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Federal Lake and Recreation area offers four parks with 187 campsites. The 3,200-acre lake is located one mile north of town, and offers additional amenities of park pavilions and playgrounds, day use and overnight campsites, boat ramps and a swimming beach. Nature trails offer hiking throughout the seasons. Fishing is regulated by the KDWPT, and the full-service Council Grove Marina is located on the west side of the dam and offers boat rentals, water toys, live bate and an assortment of tackle and camping supplies.
